This exciting online course allows psychologists to fulfill their mandated law and ethics continuing education requirements while exploring the ethical use of DSM-IV-TR system. We will examine the ethics of diagnosis using the DSM, using the Five Axial System of Diagnosis. The potential harm inherent in using diagnostic "labeling", and the risks and benefits to patients of receiving a DSM diagnosis, are discussed. Patient welfare and protection of patients' rights when using the DSM are covered in this online course.
This course also explores protecting you, the psychologist, from harm, by reviewing ethical billing practices, avoidance of fraudulent or misleading billing with managed care companies, confidentiality, privilege, and record-keeping, with special regard to diagnosis. We review major diagnosis, informed consent, proper billing and multicultural challenges. We examine legal and ethical standards to minimize the risk of malpractice civil suits.

Pamela Harmell, PhD is a licensed psychologist in California. She served as President of the California Board of Psychology, Chair of the California Psychological Association (CPA) Ethics Committee, and is the chair of the Los Angeles County Psychological Association (LACPA) Ethics Committee. Dr. Harmell teaches Professional Ethics and Law, Practicum, and Psychopathology courses at Pepperdine University.
Dr. Harmell's practice is in Los Angeles, where she works with individual adult clients and couples. She also trains clinicians in the art of treating psychotherapy clients legally and ethically, and updating them on changes in the various licensing laws, ethics codes and state laws that effect clinical practice.
