"As a sandplay therapist, I remind myself every once in a while that, first, sandplay is meant for healing."

by
Kay Bradway, PhD and Barbara McCoard, MD

This course meets the qualifications for 10 hours of continuing education

CA BBS, FL, ISST/STA, NAADAC, NBCC, TX SBEPC, TXBSWE
Sandplay - Silent Workshop of the Psyche provides a historical background for understanding sandplay as well as a helpful discussion of how it works in a clinical context. Based on the authors' clinical work, the volume includes
* the fourfold base: freedom, protection, empathy and trust
* in-depth sandplay case history material from a wide range of adults and children,
* detailed notes on interpreting the sandtray, and an
* examination of symbols and concepts used in sandplay, including:
               Turtles and transitional objects
               Toriis and transformation
               Bridges and the transcendent function
               Sun and moon
* a review of the history of sandplay
* an explanation of  'Co-transference'
* a discussion of the differences between sandplay and sandtray, and
* answers to questions that frequently come up about the theory and practice of sandplay therapy.

Through word and image, we see the journey of healing and growth of the client, in the presence of the empathic therapist. Soundly based in theory,
Sandplay - Silent Workshop of the Psyche provides an introduction to sandplay and also has much to offer for those already practicing sandplay and play therapy.

Learning Objectives

In this 10 unit course clinicians will understand:

1. the origins of sandplay from play therapy and Jungian analysis, and how it developed into its present form;
2. how sandplay therapy might be used with children and adults;
3. how sandplay therapy might be used in conjunction with play therapy and verbal therapy, including Jungian analysis;
4. the meaning and role of co-transference in sandplay and play therapy;
5. the several levels, stages, sequences, and themes in sandplay and play therapy;
6. the role of interpretation in sandplay and play therapy.

This course helps therapists to understand what sandplay therapy is all about and perhaps to use some of the principles developed by Dora Kalff in their work. But it does not prepare them to "do sandplay." Although sandplay therapy sounds so simple. it takes much time and study and consultation to prepare to actually practice as a sandplay therapist. Clinical training includes doing a personal sandplay process and ends with writing a comprehensive case report. Further information can be obtained from www.sandplay.org

This course consists of a post-test based upon reading the text. There is no online material to read. After you pass the post-test, you may print out your own certificate.

"...my role as therapist is to provide freedom, space, protection and empathy so that the twin urges toward health and growth can activate the process of healing and individuation. "

Reviews

"With her deep empathy, her respect for the sandplayer's uniqueness, and her ability to recognize and honor the sacred when it appears, Kay Bradway extends a steady hand to guide her clients on their path of individuation"
The Round Table Review May/June, 1998

"For the last three decades, Bradway has been one of the primary leaders in the Sandplay world. Her work has been instrumental in establishing and expanding Sandplay worldwide. This important book by Bradway and McCoard moves Sandplay even further along its evolutionary path. It illustrates how Sandplay, with its deep historical roots, continues to evolve into a highly effective technique for mainstream therapists. Sandplay - Silent Workshop of the Psyche gives us a deeper appreciation of Sandplay as a legitimate adjunctive technique for accessing the unconscious in support of the healing process."
Harriet Friedman, Jungian Analyst, Psychological Perspectives, Issue 37, Summer 1998

Excellent resource for beginning and advanced therapists.
This is a book that can be read cover to cover or used as a reference resource. Through an alchemical mix of word and image, the authors communicate to the reader layer upon layer of meaning which can be gleaned with each reading of the book. Each time I return to any given chapter, I discover something new. The first part, "Background and Reflections," includes a review of the history of sandplay, a comparison of another three authors' perspectives, an explanation of co-transference, a discussion of the differences between sandplay and sandtray, and helpful answers to questions that frequently come up about the theory and practice of sandplay therapy. In the second part, "Symbol Studies," the authors remind us that in human development, the image comes before the word. Clinical material in the form of sandplay images illustrate this section of the book with color plates and black and white photographs of sandplay scenes. The third and final part of the book, "Individual Cases," consists of detailed studies of ten complete sandplay processes with accompanying photos. In both "Symbol Studies" and "Individual Cases," the reader witnesses through word and image the journey of healing and growth with the therapist and with the sandplayer who attains the treasure.
