Animal Guides:
In Life, Myth and Dreams

An Analyst's Notebook

by Neil Russack, MD
with an introduction by Joseph L. Henderson, MD

This course meets the qualifications for
6
hours of continuing education units

This course provides an essential guide to the meaning of the appearance of animals in Psychotherapy, in Myth, and in Life. Vitally important to any therapist who is interested in symbols, in animals, in art, dreams or sandplay therapy, Animal Guides: In Life, Myth and Dreams will guide us into a new understanding of animals in symbolic life. Not only does this book present us with a moving narrative of animals in our lives, it also presents and honors animals in their own lives, with particular reference to the elements: Earth, Air, Fire and Water. The archetype of initiation is also followed through case presentations and vignettes, art, poetry and myth.

“This is not a ‘how to’ book. It is a book to stir the imagination. Animals link us to the mythic realm. They are messengers of the gods.” (From the Preface)

Russack states that "animals speak to us in dreams and at crucial moments in our lives. Their role is to guide us in the task of becoming human and yet more true to our animal natures. In the book the animals in our lives and dreams are presented as embodiments of energy, as prototypes of spontaneity, as models of natural integrity, and as guardians and healers"
